Arkansas Biodiesel Plant Will Use 100 Percent Soybeans - 10/11/06

One hundred percent soy-based fuel is expected to be produced by late 2007 by a new facility being built near Dewitt, Ark.  Crushed soybeans will be providing “home-grown energy” and farms within a 50 mile radius will provide the soybeans.  The meal made from the soybeans may also be used for animal feed.

Arkansas Soy Energy uses soy only and is thought to be a first in the state for this new manufacturing.  This will help local farmers who are in need for new markets.  New markets and cost effective fuel are two of the benefits stated for this area.

They are expected to produce 3 million gallons of biodiesel which is 100 percent soy after initial construction is finished.  A possibility of future expansions could double this in growth.  The plant will be built with expansions under advisement.  If the expand the potential for up to 6.5 million gallons of soy-based b100 in the future.

110,000 tons of soybeans will be processed annually, with 85 percent of that turned around into soybean meal for use in animal feeds. 124 million bushels of soybeans are produced usually by Arkansas farmers.  A bushel yields about 1.3 gallons of B100.

“Biodiesel is any renewable fuel for diesel engines that has been made from natural oils, and which meets the specifications of the American Society of Testing and Materials.  Pure, unblended biodiesel is called B100, and blended fuels are labeled to show their biofuel content.  For example, B20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.”
