Algae to Biodiesel Update - 5/18/08

Green Star Products, Inc. located in Montana recently announced it has publicly released the chronological technical report on its 2007 – 2008 algae demonstration facility.

Green Star is one of the world’s largest demonstration facilities dedicated to the commercial production of algae for energy like biodiesel and food.  They have achieved tremendous advancements in the commercial production of algae.

The algae industry is in its infancy stage still over coming production problems, but there is much hope for the future.

The report clearly states the real problems and engineering solutions provided by the demo project.

Experts believe the algae production industry offers solutions to solve three major world problems.  They believe algae production could solve the problems with food production, global warming and the energy crisis.

Algae have many advantages over agricultural products.  Algae produce 100 times more oil per acre than food oilseed crops like soy that can be used for biodiesel.  Soy only produces 50 gallons of oil per acre per year, while algae produce 4,000 gallons of oil per acre per year which can be made into biodiesel.

Algae use CO2 and produces oxygen reducing global warming gases.

Algae can be grown in non-drinkable salt or brackish water and only requires sun light.

Algae do not require land or fresh water so it does not compete with food crops.

Algae can reproduce themselves every 6 hours making for very fast growth.

After the oil is extracted the byproduct is high protein rich food.

Algae can produce this high protein food 5,000% faster than food crops such as corn.

Green Star plans to move into commercial production by 2008 to 2009.

Green Star is dedicated to providing a way to cost effectively produce products that will benefit the world and clean up the environment.  They are involved with the production of goods from renewable resources that could produce algae biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol and high protein food.
