Bioheat Reduces Global Warming - 6/22/08
Bioheat is a blend of No. 2 home heating oil and biodiesel. Like biodiesel, fuel for vehicles with the blend of biodiesel and petroleum can vary in the ratio it is blended. B5 is 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent regular No. 2 petroleum based heating oil. B20 is 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent heating oil. Some use B100 which is 100 percent biodiesel which has not been an issue.
Biodiesel is a made from agricultural products such as soybean oil or peanut oil. In the U.S. the least expensive way to make biodiesel is using used cooking oil which in the past was near worthless. Restaurant owners in the past had to pay to have it removed.
When using biodiesel over petroleum diesel there is a large decrease in the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. CO2 is one of the largest contributors to global warming. The USDA and the Department of Energy has shown soy based biodiesel has a 78 percent carbon dioxide reduction.
With ethanol there is an increased concern that the use of corn has contributed to the food crisis but with biodiesel corn is not used for its production. Used cooking oil or soybean oil is primarily used for the production of biodiesel. New technology is using algae and cellulosic products to produce biodiesel cheaper than using soybean oil.
Bioheat will be 5 to 15 cents cheaper than standard Number 2 home heating oil when blended. If the home owner chooses to make their own biodiesel using a biodiesel processor and using cooking oil from their local restaurant they save a substantial amount of money making biodiesel for only 70 cents a gallon.
