BP Dumps $90 Million on Weed Research - 7/27/08
British Petroleum has brought out the big money to research a weed known as jatropha. The jatropha plant is a large shrub which produces golf ball size oily green fruit. It can be grown almost anywhere. It can be grown in arid areas with low rain. It is inedible and resistant to pesticides. In India it is used to grow hedges.
The oil from the jatropha plant can be poured right into a biodiesel tank. This could make the jatropha plant a low impact non-food source, highly efficient, and a natural biodiesel source. Plus it’s cheap!
At $43 per barrel it makes jatropha fuel half as much as petroleum. It is Easy to grow and a highly efficient biodiesel fuel source that has no direct effect on the global food supply. Sounds like a no brainer to me.
