Brazil Requiring 2% Biodiesel in All Pumps - 12/30/07 - BioDiesel
As of Jan 1, 2008, Brazil will start requiring diesel sold to the public to contain 2 percent biodiesel, promoting the growth of the renewable energy market in Brazil.
This is a requirement for all filling stations to offer diesel fuel containing 2 percent vegetable oil according to Mines and Energy Minister Nelson Hubner. He believes there will be plenty of biodiesel to meet the demand. To meet the 2 percent requirement, 800 million liters of biodiesel will be needed. Brazil has the capacity to produce three times that amount. Fuel distributors in the country say they are already spending 100 million reals to be able to store the biodiesel and they have verified there is enough biodiesel supply to meet the demand.
Hubner said Brazil will have a great advantage; the alternative fuel will help reduce carbon gas emissions that reduce pollution.
In Brazil, biodiesel is produced from mainly soy beans in addition to sunflower seeds, palm fruit, and castor seeds.
Brazil will soon be the number one producer of ethanol in the world, using their ample supply of sugar cane to produce ethanol. Brazil boosted ethanol production 40% over the past five years, from 3 billion gallons in 2002 to 4.2 billion gallons last year. In the U.S., Shell Oil is planning to offer biodiesel in there stations in 2008 according to a local distributor.
As production of biodiesel increases, Brazil plans to increase the percentage of biodiesel blend to 5% by 2013.
