Biofuels: Why They Are So Important - 5/22/08
Osama Bin Ladin gave a speech a few years ago called “Letter to the American People.” In the speech he called the U.S. “the biggest theft in history” for using Saudi Arabia to keep oil prices down.
Bin Ladin says America owes every Muslim $30,000. He says oil should be priced at $144 per barrel. Some experts believe a quick way to accomplish this is by a 9/11 type of attack on one of Saudi Arabia’s refineries.
With oil around $125 today Bin Ladin is getting his wish without attacking anything.
Biofuels like Biodiesel and Ethanol are a large piece of the overall solution for energy independence, but environmentalist and some of the media would lead you to believe otherwise. They believe corn based ethanol is wasteful and cellulosic ethanol is years in coming. They will lead you to believe Brazil’s success in becoming energy independent by replacing half of its gasoline and diesel with sugarcane ethanol and biodiesel hurts the rainforest. They add biodiesel and ethanol will not help with global warming and it causes the increase in food prices.
The critics ignore the benefits of biodiesel and ethanol which can help the poor. Biodiesel and ethanol can help in shortages created after hurricanes and terrorism.
In Brazil the sugar to ethanol creates competition with gasoline which stabilizes prices.
We all know oil causes wars, props up dictators, and funds terrorism.
Biodiesel and ethanol are not the total solution, but only a piece of it and must be supported.
