John Deere Approves B100 Biodiesel - 5/12/08
John Deere has recently approved the use of B100 biodiesel fuel that meets the EN14214 standard. The approved engines include PowerTech, and PowerTech Plus Stage IIIa, as well as earlier designs.
B100 is 100% biodiesel with no petroleum diesel mixed with the biodiesel. A more common mixture found is B80 which is a mix of 80% biodiesel and 20% petroleum diesel.
John Deer requires that the B100 biodiesel go through an etherification process. Biodiesel is not straight vegetable oil; the glycerin must be removed from the oil to be considered true commercial grade biodiesel.
John Deere requires that the biodiesel must be obtained from a certified processor and stored properly. In addition John Deere requires that its Biodiesel Protect 100 additive must be used. Gerard Ozanne, manager of produce support at the John Deere factory in France states, “Since this type of fuel operates at approximately 10 per cent less power density and older machines may experience a loss of sealing properties, the conversion from normal diesel to B100 biodiesel should be handled in close cooperation with the local John Deere dealer.”
John Deere has posted on their website that they recognize the importance of biodiesel to the customers and the environment. They see the use of quality biodiesel in John Deere diesel engines has economic and environmental benefits. They further state other advantages include improved lubricity, reduced aromatics and reduced sulfur emissions. Using biodiesel produces less visible smoke, and lowers hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and the amount of particulate matter produced.
Individuals can also take advantage of the use of biodiesel. With the purchase of a simple to use biodiesel processor anyone can produce their own biodiesel at home for only 70 cents per gallon. The most popular model on the market is the Fuelmiester II biodiesel processor which can make batches of biodiesel, up to 40 gallons.
All that is needed is used vegetable oil that can be easily obtained from local restaurants, in most cases free of charge. After obtaining the used vegetable oil it only takes about 30 minutes of the user’s time to produce your own biodiesel.
With petroleum diesel currently running around 4.15 a gallon, using biodiesel at 70 cents a gallon is a significant savings.
