Global Biodiesel Report Identifies Industry Trends - 10/2/06

Brazil is expected to become a production leader in the biodiesel industry within the next 15 years as the US biodiesel industry consolidates.  Also, algae will become a viable feedstock.  This is according to a report for Biodiesel 2020 Global Market Survey.  This report identifies many attention-grabbing trends in the industry.  They are expecting US Biodiesel distribution to increase due to companies like Marathon Oil Co. and Chevron becoming invested in the industry.  Chevron has another plant under construction in Texas at this time.  The expansion is attempting to make biodiesel distributed nationally, where it is being distributed regionally or locally.  The US market has grown from around 300 refueling sites to around 950 sites in the last year.  Public consumption in Europe is ahead of the US right now.  Companies are hoping the consumer market will increase.

The biodiesel business hopes that with gasoline still around $2.50 per gallon, biodiesel supply and demand will increase in the coming years.

The market is growing overseas as well.  Brazil is expected to be a major supplier by 2020.  China and India is expected to overtake Europe’s standing in the biodiesel market.  The agricultural capacity is greater in these two countries compared to Europe.

The feedstock for biodiesel continues to change also.  Within the next five years it is expected that soy oil will be substituted with biodiesel.  Algae and some palm oil are in the making of contributing to the biodiesel market.  It is still hard to compute what goals and outcomes may come of this new development.
