San Francisco Building Grease to Biodiesel Plant - 6/5/08
San Francisco is building a pilot plant to covert 2.5 million gallons of the city’s restaurant used vegetable oil into biodiesel. The San Francisco Public Utilities received a one million dollar grant for the project from the California Energy Commission.
The plant will be located on the same site as the city’s sewage treatment plant. The new plant will produce three grades of biodiesel from used vegetable oil. They will be used in the city’s motor vehicles, sewage treatment plants and the city’s heating and electrical needs.
The California Energy Commission is funding these projects to help cover the 1 billion gallon shortfall of biodiesel by 2022.
The SFGreasecycle program started last year collects used vegetable oil from restaurants to convert it into biodiesel for the city’s vehicles, buses and fire trucks.
