America's First Solar/Diesel/Electric Hybrid Yacht - 4/9/08

The DSe Hybrid motor yacht is the ultimate in cruising economy.  On a sunny day she will cruise indefinitely at speeds up to 6 knots without burning a drop of diesel!  Live on board for months using zero diesel.  All the power needs can be met by the 6+ kW Solar array, battery and electric drive train from Glacier Bay.

This type vehicle is considered a serial hybrid diesel which is a boaters dream when using biodiesel.  Serial hybrid diesel means the all the power to the propellers comes from the electric motors and not the diesel engine.  While there is sunshine the diesel generators never start up to provide additional electricity.  With diesel fuel currently at 4.00 a gallon maybe less if you can get off road diesel wow what a dream boat.  This means more time on the water and less money sucked out of your wallet at the pump.

Very large commercial vessels as well as all locomotive trains have used the advantage of diesel electric technology for many years but the DSe Hybrid motor yacht will be the first pleasure boat to use this technology adding solar power to the mix.

Ossa_36HP_Motor_150PixIn the port and starboard hulls are the Powerlite hi-voltage 35 HP motors.   The motors seamlessly cruises the DSe silently at slow speeds.  The motors have been developed specifically for use in yacht propulsion and do not require the use of a transmission or other gear reduction.  The motors have a flat torque curve, developing the rated torque from startup to maximum RPM.  With efficiencies reaching 98.9%, OSSA Powerlite motors are among the most energy efficient rotating machines in the world. The variable-speed generator(s) start automatically if power demand increase.

Ossa_25kWGenSet_150PixIn the bow of each hull is a 25 kW, variable speeds Ossa Powerlite diesel generator with a high voltage DC in sound shied.  These are powered by a Mercedes 1 liter diesel.  The Ossa generator has exceptionally high power density providing Propulsion Duty Rated meaning it meets the rigorous international requirements established for generators functioning as prime movers in commercial diesel-electric marine installations.  Biodiesel would be the ultimate fuel used in the application at 70 cents a gallon it would be much cheaper than even off road diesel.

Below the cabin soles are AGM-style deep cycle batteries providing a total of 24kW/Hours.
The DSe has a pair of sleek hulls with underwater shapes resembling a torpedo.  The DSe requires 10kW of power to cruise at 7.25 knots. The superstructure is designed to maximize the surface area for the 6.6 kW photovoltaic solar arrays.

DSe_Release_MAIN_150pix02The Dse Hybrid motor yacht has numerous comforts and qualities including 6 knots under solar power only.  The boat includes two staterooms with ensuite heads for two couples or family cruising together.  It includes a spacious and comfortable great room and a roomy pilot house.  All the “optional” equipment is standard.

DSe_BridgeLookingAftNEW_150Pixel02The express bridge has wrap around seating for 8 and twin helm chairs.  The DSe includes a Raymarine E120 multiscreen, Ossa Powelite LCD touchscreen control panel and Raymarine autopilot with follow up electric steering.

The DSe Hybrid measures 39’6” x 17’ x 26”

Add biodiesel at 70 cents a gallon if you make it yourself with FREE solar power why live at home just move into a DSe motor yacht and live almost free!
