Batteries will be the Key to Vehicles in the Future - 3/17/08

A123Systems is currently one of the leading manufactures of high power lithium ion batteries in the world.  They provide a cost effective solution to the cordless tool market.  This high volume market provides economies of scale which will provide for cost reductions in their new market of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV).

Currently the limitations of the HEV market have been from the performance and cost of the batteries.   A123Systems produce millions of high quality batteries annually at a competitive price.

A123Systems Automotive Class Lithium ion technology uses Nanophonsphat technology providing unmatched power, abuse tolerance and life.

HEV’s require high power discharge and regen pulses with long cycle life.  Larger than normal batteries are required for HEVs, but A123Systems technology provides less power loss with usage, allowing for a smaller than normal battery.  Their technology also maintains power output after hundreds of thousands of micro cycles and years of operation.  Predictable power is achieved with low impedance growth and thermal management is built into their batteries.

A123Systems is currently working with numerous OEMs on the HEV market, bringing the next generation of vehicles to the market with a cost effective solution.

Continental Automotive and A123Systems are in line to possibility receive the production contract for the Chevy Volt battery.  It is projected the Chevy Volt will not be in production until sometime in 2010.
