Daihatsu Planning to Build Electric Cars - 8/24/09
Daihatsu was in the American market for a short period of time ending in 1992, but still markets their cars in 27 other countries. Daihatsu is a Japanese car company that sells a range of cars from 7 passenger SUVs to a small hard top convertible called the Copen. Their cars are small, but get great fuel mileage. They may soon be building cars that do not use gas at all.
Daihatsu president Teruyuki Minoura believes if they can find high quality batteries they would make all electric cars. They have been meeting with Toyota to learn more about integrating batteries into their cars. Toyota has a controlling interest in Daihatsu, so sharing information is not a problem.
Minoura does not want to build hybrids because he believes it would add too much weight and not be eco-friendly.
