Fiero Converted to Solar Electric Car at DC Auto Show - 2/2/09

In a section of the DC auto show called the Green Car Pavilion, alternative fuel vehicles are highlighted. One of the most eye catching was a yellow Fiero or it use to be a Fiero. The info sheet taped to the car says it was a 1985 Pontiac Fiero. Solar Electric Engineering of Santa Rosa, CA removed its old gasoline components and replaced them with (18) 6-volt Trojan R-125 lead acid batteries and a series wound GE motor. After the conversion to solar electric the name also changed from Fiero to Destiny 2000.
The Destiny 2000 will go 50 miles on a charge and has a top speed of 75 mph. It will do 0 to 60 in 11 seconds.
If a conversion shop in Santa Rosa, CA can convert a car from gas to electric with off the shelf parts, why cannot all the big smart automakers simply do the same??
