Nissan Plans to Build Two Battery Plants - 7/22/09
Nissan Motor Co. has announced with the governments of the UK and Portugal their plans to build two plants for the production of advanced lithium-ion batteries. This is the first step towards batteries being used for Nissan’s Zero Emission Mobility Program in Europe.
Both governments have offered financial assistance and other support to Nissan so the plants will be located in their countries. They recognize the benefits of what the plants could do for their economies by boosting jobs and pioneering the manufacturing and sales of zero emission vehicles in Europe.
The UK site will be Sunderland where Nissan already has a plant. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown was quoted as saying, "Nissan's investment in a new battery plant and its hope to start producing electric vehicles here in Sunderland is great news for the local economy, creating up to 350 direct jobs and creating and safeguarding hundreds more in the associated supply chain.”
