Survey Says Americans Want the Chevy Volt But… - 9/11/09
The Volt is a data driven vehicle. Its design is driven by public perception and aerodynamic data. Its driving range before needing to be recharged also fits most drivers’ needs. Seven-five percent of drivers in the U.S. drive less than 40 miles per day. The Chevy Volt is designed to drive on battery for 40 miles before switching over to a combustion engine.
Pike Research surveyed 1,041 people, 48% said they were very interested in buying a plug-in hybrid with a 40 mile electric only range. These same people said they would like to see public charging stations at school, work, and shopping locations. BUT most are not willing to pay the cost. The Chevy Volt and plug in Prius are going to cost around $40,000 before incentives. A simile car would not cost over $20,000 to $25,000. The survey revealed that customers are willing to pay 12% more for a plug in hybrid, but that brings the price to only $28,000. The government is pushing for plug in vehicles so this will make it very difficult for auto makers to fill in this gap.
