Utility Companies Plan Infrastructure for the Chevy Volt - 8/5/08

GM is working with over 30 U.S. electric utilities to build an infrastructure for customers driving the Volt to easily recharge the Volt’s batteries.  The Volt is slated to be in production late 2010.

A few of the power companies GM is working with are American Electric Power Co., Duke Energy Corp., and PG&E Corp. The Volt will plug into a standard wall outlet commonly found in homes and will drive around 40 miles on a single charge.  Most people’s commutes are less than 40 miles so the engine or “range extender” may never start up.

CEO of GM Rick Wagoner wants the Volt to be part of the plan to cut fuel use and catch up with Toyota in hybrid technology.  Electric cars will be more successful if an infrastructure was in place allowing customers to conveniently recharge their car when not at home.
