Dual Mode Hybrid Will Be on Road This Year - 10/20/08

The BYD Dual Mode F3 or F3DM is going to be on the market at the end of this year.

The BYD F3DM has gone through extensive testing and is almost ready.  BYD designed their own batteries that power the F3DM instead of contracting them out like most automakers.  The batteries are proprietary batteries, which use lithium-ion iron phosphate.  BYD states these batteries will last 600,000 km or 10 years before they will need to be replaced.  The electric motor can power the car for 100 km (62 miles) on electric power provided by the battery.  When the batteries are depleted the small gasoline engine kicks in.  The gasoline engine also aids the electric motor when traveling up steep hills or high speeds.

The BYD F3DM can be recharged by 50% within 10 minutes using a special charger.  Using a standard home outlet the car can be fully recharged in 7 hours.
