Dubai’s going Hybrid by 2012 - 9/4/08

By 2012 Dubai plans to have an all hybrid fleet of taxis, government vehicles, police cars and ambulances.  This comes from an agreement between General Motors, Dubai Road and Transport, and the Government of Dubai to reduce emissions on the environment.

Ten RTA taxis are already on the road running on both fuel and electricity.  The initial feedback is encouraging.

This switch to hybrid comes from an initiative put forward by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Mektoum, Ruler of Dubai.

A partnership between GM and RTA Hybrid Taxi cooperation was the first step in a plan to reduce pollution caused by vehicles.  In 2007 Shaikh Mohammed challenged the country to move to hybrid vehicles.  Through the example of the use of hybrid taxis and government vehicles hopefully consumers in Dubai will join in the move.

Hybrid vehicles in the Dubai’s stop and start driving is ideally suited for that purpose.

The first then hybrids have withstood the heat, humidity and dust in the summer months.  In addition GM states there was significant saving in both carbon emission and fuel efficiency.

The next step will be phasing out the old fleet with 6,000 to 10,000 hybrid vehicles.  Dubai’s vision is to move all their vehicles to hybrid by 2012.
