Ikea to Switch Company Fleet to Hybrid Cars - 6/12/07
Ikea yesterday unveiled plans to switch its fleet of company cars as part of a drive to cut the company’s carbon emissions.
The Swedish retailer, said it is to purchase 50 Honda Civic Hybrid cars, with more to follow in 2008, in a move which will see Ikea become the first private company in the UK to use hybrid vehicles. There are currently just under 100 cars in the company’s fleet. Ikea has pledged to cut its carbon emissions by 9% by 2010.
The move to hybrid cars, which combine an electric motor with conventional fuel use, does not include the firm’s delivery vehicles, although the group said it will be testing electric vehicles at its new town center store in Coventry, due to open later in the year.
The low emission cars produce significantly less carbon dioxide than European targets, which require new cars sold in Europe to produce no more than 120 grams of carbon per kilometer before 2012.
