100 MPG Toyota Prius in the Works - 10/5/08

Something amazing is coming from Toyota for 2009.  It’s a Prius, breaking the 100 mpg barrier.

The next Prius is set to be an evolution.  The hybrid will keep its 1.5 liter gas engine.  Toyota is on a mission to drive the economy rating much higher and lower the cost by 20 to 30 percent.

Toyota responded to the news of Honda planning a low price Fit hybrid for 2008 with a price just $1,700 over the regular gasoline Fit.  So Toyota has slashed the R&D cost for the next Prius and has planned a hybrid differential of $4,240 to compete.

Honda has become the winner in Japan with the tiny Insight coupe at 102 mpg.  The Prius is just behind at 99 mpg.  The new Toyota Prius will be getting 113 mpg.  Japanese fuel economy figures will be different than the U.S. figures.

The next Prius will be able to run longer and faster in electric mode up to 30 mph.  This will greatly extend its zero emissions range.
