Hybrid Solution for Mobile Devices using Hydrogen - 8/2/06

Traditional batteries are unable to meet the demands of customers using portable and handheld devices.  Micro fuel cells using hydrogen may be the solution.  A number of issues will need to be resolved before they reach the commercial market.

Visiongain’s latest report states hybrid power systems with fuel cell and Li-ion/Li-Po combinations will be available by the end of the decade.  Visiongain believes fuel cell only mobile devices will eventually become more popular than the hybrid power systems.

Visiongain believes fuel cells in mobile devices will grow from seven million in 2009 to 92.6 million in 2011.  Customers are demanding longer battery life.  Producers of mobile devices providing this next generation of fuel cell powered devices will create a powerful element of product.  Many fuel cell manufactures are working to bring their products to the market as soon as 2007.

Dr. Kauhik Das with Visiongain says the initial success of the fuel cell will be with the borohydrides which are non-flammable, non-toxic and work in a range of temperatures.  Dr. Das says volume production will be required to lower the current high cost of production.  Demand for fuel cells has not reached this level.  Customer awareness will needed to move the market forward
