Insecticide an Ecological Disaster - 11/24/08

Why are insects quietly but quickly disappearing?

This is becoming a critical realization.  American biologist E. O. Wilson said, once insects ruled the world and they play a central role in maintaining ecosystems and the web of life on earth.  But most people view insects as a nuisance and destructive to crops.

Recent observations in American, Britain and Europe have seen recent honey bee colonies crashing in increasing numbers.  This is a real eye opener to many on how important insects are to the earth.

Matt Shardlow director of Buglife for the Invertebrate Conservation Trust says, this is the only the beginning of an understanding and much more is needed to preserve our population of insects and other invertebrates.  Invertebrates are creatures without backbones which make up the majority of animal life.

The declines in invertebrates and insects are now greater than among any other group of living things.  The decline is greater than declines in birds, plants and mammals.

It is not sure what affect this will have on our planet but just think if our honey bees continue to decline what affect it may have on crop production.
