NRG Energy and eSolar Partner - 02/27/09
NRG Energy has partnered with eSolar to develop up to 500 Mega Watt of solar power plants. NRG will be investing $10 million for an equity stake and the development rights to three projects developed by eSolar.
Last month a similar project has begun with solar thermal start up Ausra.
The new project will be the first solar endeavor NRG started. NRG has invested in wind farms in Texas partnering with BP. They have also partnered with Powerspan in large scale carbon capture. NRG has 48 plants with an energy generation capacity of 24 GW.
NRG wants to use their construction capabilities with eSolar’s CSP technology to advance their renewable energy portfolio and accelerate the development of solar energy on a commercial scale.
NRG will sell the electricity to utilities. NRG says this will be the first eSolar plant that will lead to other plants being developed.
Southern California Edison has partnered with eSolar to purchase 235 Mega Watts of solar power. eSolar says the solar power plant will be the first fully functioning commercial solar thermal power tower plant built in the U.S.
