Canada's Largest Wind Farm - 11/28/06
Brookfield Power has announced it has completed the Prince Wind Energy Project located northwest of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
The Prince Wind Energy Project has 126 wind turbines covering 20,000 acres with a capacity of 189 megawatts. At the completion of this project Price is now the largest wind farm in Canada.
Construction of the wind farm began Sept 2005. The first phase of the project produced 99 megawatts when it was commissioned on Sept 21, 2006. Phase two produced 90 megawatts when it was commissioned on Nov. 19, 2006. Price has been awarded a 20 year power supply agreement under the Ontario Government’s new renewable energy program. The project will employ 15 full time employees when fully functional.
The completion of Brookfield Power’s first wind project increased their total power capacity to 3,800 megawatts. It will increase their renewable power in Ontario by 1,200 megawatts.
At the opening of Prince Wind Farm, Ontario is now Canada’s leading wind power generator. The Prince Wind Farm will produce enough electricity to power 40,000 homes annually.
