CBI Wants to Shift from Wind Power to Nuclear - 7/15/09
The CBI has stated that the Labour’s energy policy is weakening Britain’s energy security. This is making it harder to cut carbon dioxide emissions because of the strong reliance on wind power.
John Cridland, the CBI’s deputy director-general, said: “The government is pitching too high on what they are claiming can be obtained from wind, [which] will crowd out other low-carbon energy sources.” He said that it could give Britain “the most volatile energy prices in Europe”.
The CBI warns with “business as usual” policies will cause Britain to see an increase in the growth of wind power and new gas burning power stations that will be needed when the wind is not blowing.
This could make Britain more dependent on imported gas from countries like Russia. It will increase the exposure to volatile commodity prices and in turn lowering the ability to cut emissions from fossil fuels.
CBI wants more investment in new nuclear reactors and clean coal power stations.
